As those feelings are worked through, it is imperative that amputees have a support system to assist them during their recovery as well as while moving forward with their daily living. With that in mind, we suggest the following actions to help overcome limb loss.

Determine an Objective
Find a reason to start each day with a purpose by establishing practical and significant aspirations. This could be starting a new exercise routine, picking a new leisure pursuit, volunteering with a nonprofit organization, planning a family vacation, and more. By working towards attainable and realistic goals, there is a good likelihood that you enhance your self-esteem. Regardless of what is to be accomplished, having a desire to achieve a daily goal will assist in the management of a fulfilling life.

Establish a Daily Schedule
Following a program of planned activities will enable you to complete your daily objective. This allows you to better focus on what you’re looking to accomplish that day instead of being pessimistic or thinking negative thoughts. Following a routine can enhance focus and it should include activities that work your body and mind.

Focus on Self-care
In addition to getting the appropriate amount of sleep, exercising as able, and following a healthy eating plan, completing relaxation and mindfulness drills in an effort to reduce stress are a good path to follow.

Recognize and Communicate Your Feelings
Sharing sentiments with family, friends, and/or health care professionals allows amputees to better handle the healing process. Keep in mind it is perfectly natural to be mad, dejected, distressed, or have a variety of other emotions after undergoing an amputation. The important thing is to get those feelings out in the open rather than keeping them inside.

Associate With Others
Maintaining a connection with others can enhance your sense of belonging to a community, whether it be family, friends, co-workers, members of your church, or your poker group. Stay in regular contact with those who are able to listen to you and share positive thoughts. Participating in social activities are advantageous to an individual’s physical and emotional wellbeing.

It may also be a good idea to participate in a support group of others who are facing similar circumstances. This allow you to explain what you’re experiencing while also seeing how similar people are responding to their situation.

Welcome Positivity
Maintaining an optimistic outlook is an important component of managing limb loss. It is necessary to emphasize what you can control and highlight how you have improved since the amputation. Keeping a positive attitude allows you to express your feelings while staying committed to what you’re able to do well and continue to move forward.

Convey Negative Sentiments
It is imperative to share emotions rather than keep them bottled up. This can be done verbally, in writing, through artwork, or however you find best to acknowledge what you’re feeling. Be sure to share your thoughts with others so they can help you address them a positive way.
